Cats That Look Like Pin Up Girls

I love cats so much that I think I follow more cats than people on Instagram. I'm perfect for this Internet age of cat ladies. Meet you at the Internet Cat Video Festival? Aw, hell yiis! (No, but seriously.)

Consequently, Cat Art Show LA, a self-proclaimed "meditation and ... celebration of the feline form" is right up my alley. Which is where I found a link to the venerable Cats That Look Like Pin Up Girls tumblr. Yay cats. That look like pinups. Maow.

ART

Alan Dickson aka alanrules - Be Healthy, Yeah (NSFW)

I met Alan in Brooklyn at his art show. He'd plastered the walls with shinnnny gold pom poms he said Cee Lo Green had used in a music video. (Or maybe it was the 2012 superbowl halftime show starring Madonna. One of those.)

Near the gold pom pom wall, he'd hung babe-alicious bodies peeking out from the gold poms.

His series, "Be Healthy, Yeah," follows suit with the babe-alicious photos. But, in the series it's bodies + fruit. More body than fruit. But, yeah. They're pretty cool. Check 'em out.

Be Healthy. Yeah.

FICTION/POETRY

riojones7, Instapoet

When mindlessly rabbit hole-ing through Instagram feeds, I found these beautiful typewritten Federico García Lorca-reminiscent poems. Each one is a distilled emotion, a tightly-packed newly budding rose. It's fun to imagine the poet standing in front of his gas stove (probably somewhere in Brooklyn) burning the edges of these evocations.

To read more, visit his Instagram feed @ riojones7. Or, what fun: if you'd like to request a poem, email him at riojonespoetry [at] gmail.com. I think I'm going to do so right now.

FICTION/POETRY

Matthew Di Paoli - Other Forms of Life

In "Other Forms of Life," a grandfather and a grandson search for the answer to the mystery of how a bag full of bloody dear tails wound up on the grandfather's doorstep. As someone who's recently lost a grandfather, the pedestrian simplicity of this grandfather/grandson's search (they wait in line, stand on sideways, talk with the drycleaner) -- and its lack of a fulfilling conclusion for the grandfather -- pulled at my heartstrings.

MUSIC

The Knew - Man Monster

The long-haired straight-forward rocker dudes in Denver band the Knew make up, "the Garage band everyone wishes they had the balls to form." Their music attacks your eardrums with horn sections, fuzzed-out guitars, synthesizers, layers upon layers of drums and guitar. It's fun, gritty, and fuzzy-loud ... a load of buckshot in your tailfeathers.

WEIRD, FICTION/POETRY

Steve Roggenbuck - make something beautiful before you are dead

Steve Roggenbuck, the Internet's version of Whitman, has made me think poetry may not actually be dead to anyone other than poets? Some lines from his awesome/weird YouTube poem, make something beautiful before you are dead:

"this is a fucked up tree; this is three trees coming out of the same tree ...

I want to kiss you on the baseball field in the middle of the night ...

back in my grandfather's day, they didn't have yolo! ...

guess who you can't hug when you're dead ... everyone! ...

you are literally gonna die; make something beautiful before you are dead ...

hey fricker, guess what? we're both alive at the same time!"

Anna Ayeroff

Through cyclical, repetitive labor, Anna creates works of art that embody her experience of continually searching for a better world. She uses a variety of mediums in her work such as photography, film, sculpture, and drawing.

Seam, the work pictured, was created with paper, thread, and mylar. It, along with Anna's other colorful, ethereal pieces, reflects her continuous search for a utopia, or perfect place.

MUSIC

Charles Mingus | II B.S.

Good ol' Mingus. This great track kicks off a great album with a great title, Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus. It's got that swing for sure, but the best part of his compositions is how they always seem on the verge of falling apart. Hell, some of them do fall apart. I'd be interested in hearing a Reinhardt / Grappelli combo take this one on, if only to exploit the minor-key forward-thrust that makes this tune so easy on the earballs.

MUSIC

Jacqueline Taïeb | Le Cœur Au Bout Des Doigts

Here's a swingin' track from Jacqueline Taïeb, one of those yé-yé girls who finds a brief resurgence every now and then, most recently after Francoise Hardy appeared on the Moonrise Kingdom soundtrack. This one sounds more like Ocean's Eleven / Mark Ronson. I dig the delay on the horns, and the singing is smooth and confident. Am I in love, or is it tinnitus?

MUSIC

The Trinikas | Remember Me

Here's a nice little single from The Trinikas. I guess they were a high school group? If you ever go to your local Northern Soul night, notice how many of the bigger tracks have a bit of minor feel to them ("California Soul," "Nothin But a Heartache," etc.) Throw in one like this, that starts on the 4? You got yourself a hit!

MUSIC

Betty Davis | Don't Call Her No Tramp

BettyDavis1.jpg

Here's another kinky jam from the olden days. Phunk/phashion diva Betty Davis was briefly married to Miles, but apparently she was "too wild" for him. Larry Graham is all over her first album, and there's plenty of Sly-ed out rollin' and thumpin' on this track from They Say I'm Different, her second. Frantic clavinet courtesy of Tony Vaughn. Light In the Attic dusted these off a few years ago, just piling up more gems in their excellent catalogue. Righteous proto-Parliament-via-Bowie cover art on this one as well. Dig in, folks!
